One of the UK’s dynamic and versatile cellists, Benjamin is Principal Cello of the BBC Concert Orchestra. As a soloist he has recorded for films such as Brighton Rock, Norwegian Woods, Glorious 39 and concerto performances include Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations, Gulda Cello Concerto and Patrick Nunn's 'Fata Morgana', which features a semi-acoustic electric cello which Benjamin made, all broadcast live on BBC R3. Recently he released a Solo recording with the BBC Concert Orchestra, a world premiere of John Foulds Lento and Scherzetto.
He received a ‘Sony Radio academy award’ for a performance on BBC R2 in 2013 and in 2015 was awarded an ARAM by the Royal Academy of Music.
He was a member of the Philharmonia Orchestra before his appointment as Principal with the BBC Concert Orchestra and is in demand as a Guest Principal Cellist with other Major British Orchestras.
Since joining the Fibonacci Sequence 2005 he has recorded works by Messiaen, Schubert, Elgar and Brahms for the Dutton and Deux Elles labels.
Benjamin is deeply grateful to Kathron Sturrock for the loan of a wonderful Ouchard bow in memory of her late husband, Professor David Bennett.
